A Different Type of Show!

We have set up our summer musicals differently from most youth theater programs. You can do Guys and Dolls and still travel in summer, still have a summer job, still have plenty of time to relax and hang out with friends! We know that most teens are looking for a less intense summer experience, so unlike summer camp style shows where the cast needs to be present all day, every day for a huge chunk of their summer vacation, our summer musicals only rehearse 3 half days a week, and we only call the cast when they are needed.

We understand that families travel in summer, and are accommodating of most travel plans and can schedule around them. AND we can customize the level of involvement to meet the needs of the individual student! Want to be part of the show, but need a schedule with minimal time commitment? Reach out, we can probably make it work!

A Unique Take on a Classic Show

Here at Renegade we like to approach theater in new and unexpected ways. So when we choose a classic Golden Age show like Guys and Dolls, you know we will be putting a twist on it! We are excited to explore Guys and Dolls through the lens of performative gender, with plans to cast the show without regard to gender.Any character could be cast as any gender- Anyone could be a Guy and anyone could be a Doll, those terms are not gender specific!

Hot Box girls who are drag queens? It's possible! A female Sky Masterson or a non-binary Nicely Nicely Johnson? We are open to it! The goal is to cast the right actor for the role and to do new and interesting things with the show. Our staff is excited to explore all the possibilities and the one thing that's for sure is this isn't going to be your Grandma's Guys and Dolls!

Story

Set in Depression-era Times Square, Guys and Dolls is about a couple of big city gamblers and the women who love them. It tells the overlapping stories of high-roller Sky Masterson, who falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown, and lovable rapscallion Nathan Detroit, engaged for 14 years to Miss Adelaide, a headliner at the Hot Box Club.

Nathan runs a famous floating crap game, and an ongoing plot line involves his quest for a safe place for the game as Adelaide continues her quest to convince him to marry her. Meanwhile, Sarah, mistakenly believing that Sky set up an illegal game at the mission, tries to fight her affection for the charismatic crapshooter.

One of the funniest and melodious shows in seasons. Everything about it seems practically perfect.
- Variety
Mr. Loesser's lyrics and songs have the same affectionate appreciation of the material as the book, which is funny without being self-conscious or mechanical.
- The New York Times
It is filled with the salty characters and richly original language sacred to the memory of the late Master
- New York Post

Cast of characters

Nathan Detroit

A good-hearted gambler and craps game organizer who could never hit the bigtime. He loves Adelaide, but cannot quit his gambling ways. A broke schemer with unwitting ways.Vocal range: Baritone

Miss Adelaide

Nathan's fiancé and a lead performer at the Hot Box nightclub. She loves Nathan more than anything in the world and desperately wants to get married. Pretty, outspoken, stubborn.Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano

Sarah Brown

A pretty, bright-eyed woman who serves as Sergeant of the local Mission. She fully believes in her worthy cause and wishes to convert the gambling sinners to saints. Falls unexpectedly in love with Sky along the way. She is prudish and uptight, but eventually lets go.Vocal range: Soprano

Sky Masterson

A high-stakes gambler whose luck never seems to run out, and a wild card who surprises himself when he falls in love with the unlikeliest of women. Suave, smart, handsome.Vocal Range: Baritone

Arvide Abernathy

The bass drum and cymbal player in the Mission band, he is Sarah's loving grandfather. Wise and sweet, he wants nothing but the best for her.Vocal range: Baritone

Harry the Horse

A crook and gambler. He is a tough guy with dollar signs as his bottom line. Brings Big Jule into Nathan's craps game and backs his cheating, but is also a man of his word in the gambling community.Vocal range: Baritone

Nathan

Just like his name suggests, he is the nicest and cheeriest of the gambling crooks. High-spirited and a bit naïve, but sincere and genuine. Nathan's loyal friend and lackey.Vocal range: Tenor

General Matilda Cartwright

General Cartwright is the formidable leader of the Save-a-Soul Mission organization. This is a great place to feature someone who doesn't have a strong singing voice, but can appear imposing!Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano

Big Jule

A big time craps player from Chicago who uses a gun and his own pair of rigged dice to bully his way into never losing. Tough looking. A bit of an oaf.

Lieutenant Brannigan

A New York police officer who is on to Nathan's illegal craps games and is dead-set on catching him. A tough, no-nonsense character.

Benny Southstreet

Nathan's right-hand man and a gambler himself. Smart, slick, always moving and shaking, but with what he thinks are Nathan's best interest at heart.Voice range: Baritone

Gamblers/Guys

The Gamblers/Guys are the well-dressed "comic glue" of the show. They are the rest of your male ensemble (except for the Mission Band). A variety of gamblers, pedestrians, workers, NYC folks of all types will work perfectly for this group. If you have a large cast of Guys, feel free to make a group of them just Gamblers (Crapshooters). If you do this, consider casting your better movers as the Gamblers. These are great parts for beginning actors and can certainly include girls playing boys parts! Angie The Ox is a gambler with one solo speaking line. Gamblers also include Liver Lips Louie, Society Max, and the Lookout.

Hot Box Girls

The Hot Box Girls work in the club and are in the act "A Bushel and a Peck" where Miss Adelaide is the headliner. Cast your stronger singers and dancers here. Time to bring out the "cornball!" MIMI is a Hot Box Girl who has one line.

Master of Ceremonies

The Master of Ceremonies is the host at the Hot Box Club. He has one memorable line, so this is a great role for someone new to the stage.

Dolls

The Dolls are other ensemble females that are not Hot Box girls or Mission Band members. These are non-speaking roles and are perfect for performers of any ability. Like the Guys, they can represent a variety of colorful NYC characters.

Mission Band

The Mission Band is the tireless group that can be comprised of as many performers as you wish. They are more about persistence than precision. Cast ensemble kids who are not strong dancers but are comfortable with singing and taking stage direction. The Mission Band includes Agatha, Calvin, Martha, and Bertha.
